Today's Bible Reading
Luke 2:20 – “The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”
Life is filled with “moments” that brand heart and memory. Some are dark and foreboding, and then there are those rare amazing moments – radiant, beautiful, spectacular and magnificent. This is what the shepherds saw in those moments on the hills of Judea.
It is “the glory of the Lord” that evokes wonder and worship – and, in the case of the shepherds, fear.
The angelic messenger is described as “the angel of the Lord” who was accompanied by the “Glory of the Lord” which “shone” in such a way as to terrify the shepherds (Luke 2:9). Like so many involved in the Christmas story, those poor shepherds were completely unequipped for such a sight.
It is “the glory of the Lord” that evokes wonder and worship – and, in the case of the shepherds, fear. Once outcasts, the shepherds were now embraced. Once unfit for the temple, they now stood with prophets and priests to celebrate the arrival of the Messiah. In fact, they were the first to kneel at the manger, worshiping the newborn Saviour!
In our joy, we proclaim Christ Jesus as our First Love, our Redeemer who has opened the way for us to eternal life. This is what Christmas is all about. We love, because He first loved us! Now we can live a life of worship and celebration as a testimony of our faith.
