Luke 1:38 – “‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’”
After his first announcement on Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the archangel Gabriel made his second announcement to a young woman named Mary in the village of Nazareth. She had been selected for the role and the privilege of giving birth to the promised Messiah.
Mary’s response was one of submissive confusion: she was ready to do the Lord’s bidding but mystified as to how such a thing could occur.
Mary’s response was one of submissive confusion: she was ready to do the Lord’s bidding but mystified as to how such a thing could occur. She was a virgin, betrothed to her fiancé Joseph, and had no intention of violating her vows of purity.
The angel assured her that she would in no way violate her vows, and that the child would be the result of the miraculous intervention of the Holy Spirit. At that point, Mary’s response was one of simple availability: “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38).
In the story above, we see that God uses ordinary people as His vessels to fulfil His purpose. Like Mary, all we need is a willing, submissive and obedient spirit. Though the path ahead may be unclear, Mary’s total submission and obedience to God’s will is grounded in her reverence and faith in Him.
