Luke 2:10 – “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”
The life of a Bethlehem shepherd was a life of loneliness and labour, danger and poverty. In their day to day work, they stayed out in the fields and kept watch over their flock by night from wolves and bandits, which were common in the land of Judea at that time.
Imagine how surprised the Bethlehem shepherds were to have the angel Gabriel appear before them in the middle of the field.
Imagine how surprised the Bethlehem shepherds were to have the angel Gabriel appear before them in the middle of the field. For them, it was just another cold night watch, and no one could have anticipated that these simple herdsmen would be the first to hear the Good News.
This only confirms that our God is the God of the unexpected. And few things couldn’t be more unexpected than the King of Heaven being born in a stable, and the first notice of Christ’s birth given not to the princes and chief priests, but to common, illiterate men like the shepherds.
What God sees in us is not what the world sees because He sees our hearts. Like the shepherds, God saw their simplicity and humility in life, immediately hurrying off to find Mary and Joseph to worship Jesus. They came before God with a contrite heart and they were deemed worthy in His eyes.
As we grow in our walk with God, let us continue to humble ourselves before God, and adopt a posture of humility at all times.
