A new lease of life after heart bypass

About two years ago, while facing the uncertainty of a heart bypass operation, God’s word assured me that all would be alright. “I will not die but live… he has not given me over to death.” (Psalm 118:17-18)

You see, the three main arteries in my heart were blocked 100%, 100% and 80%. Possible complications from surgery included stroke and kidney failure. I’d had a stroke and heart attack before, and even heard of someone dying from a stroke after an operation, despite not having stroke before.

The cardiologist said my condition was bad news, but after praying and being filled with God’s peace, I underwent the surgery and came out healthy. The surgeon proclaimed that I had gone from “zero to hero” and the results showed that my condition was “fantastic”.

I thank God for the wisdom and ability to exercise and exclude all meats except fish in my diet for the past ten years. Praise God that the surgery was a success and that He has given me a new lease of life, so that I may continue to do His good works. – John Quay

God protected my health and my dad’s

Many years ago, I was experiencing lower abdominal pain for almost a year. I consulted a few gynaecologists, but none were able to pinpoint the root cause. During this time, my father in Hong Kong was also diagnosed with third-stage nasal cancer and I returned to accompany him on hospital visits.

I had many sleepless nights worrying about both our conditions. My prayers almost always ended in tears but I sensed God reminding me of Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

A few months later, it turned out that my abdominal pain was chronic appendicitis! I had surgery and it went away. My father also completed his chemotherapy, and I thank God for saving my dad. Apart from appendicitis, I also have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which makes it hard to conceive. But today I’m a mother of a healthy baby girl, Elizabeth.

All the gifts of health and new life are from God, and I’m thankful for His unfailing love and blessings throughout the years. – Yan Law

God is my healer from SLE joint pains

Back in 2021, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease. The doctor said it was hereditary, and I experienced joint pains in my arms, fingers, and couldn’t play the piano.

But I wanted to worship the Lord, so I played simple, slow songs and recorded them on YouTube. Every day, I laid a hand on my fingers and prayed Isaiah 53:5’s “by his wounds we are healed.”

I remember giving my life to Jesus after my son passed away in 2014. After many losses in life, I told God that I had nothing left except the talents He gave me and that “my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me…” (Acts 20:24)

Gradually, I experienced lesser joint pains. But a year later, the antibody numbers increased, indicating the SLE getting worse. Yet, I continued to trust God without taking medication.

One day, the pain disappeared. I was fine for several months and recently, I’ve even been playing fast piano pieces. My next blood test showed the antibody had dropped too. Jesus is my Healer and I proclaim His goodness! – Li Sze

God heard my cry during delivery
Twenty-five years ago, I moved to Punta Gorda, Belize with my first son when he was three years old. At that time, my husband had already gone there to work for almost a year.

Not long after, I was pregnant with my second child. Although I was glad with the news, I was worried because I didn’t know if I could cope in an unknown country. The Punta Gorda hospital was without proper services, no child specialist doctor and no experienced nurses. The other option was to book a helicopter to transport me to the main hospital in Belize City which was far from my location.

I prayed to God to direct me to the hospital that I should go to. After that, I felt calm, joyful and peaceful to take on the challenge. When the time came, I was brought to the Punta Gorda hospital.

The nurses accidentally broke my uterine wall which caused a great loss of blood. I was in shock and was not able to push the baby out. Yet, the nurses kept calling me to push or else the baby would die inside.

Out of desperation, my heart cried out to “Jesus” three times. Right after, the nurses exclaimed that I had a beautiful and healthy baby boy. Praise the Lord! It was my Lord Jesus Christ who had helped me push my baby out for I did not have any energy left.

While nursing the baby at home the next day, I fainted due to the earlier loss of blood. Thankfully, a doctor from Belize City was in town. She gave me injections of iron for five days to increase my blood count and my health was restored!

The verse Psalm 34:17 reminds me of the Lord’s goodness: “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” – Louise

God healed both my hands
After returning from Belize, Central America where I stayed for about six years, I realised that my hands experienced problems. I visited an orthopaedic and was told I needed several surgeries on both hands, or the nerves would die and obstruct blood circulation.

I was shocked at this diagnosis and utterly lost my faith in God. I became angry with those who had contributed to the cause of this illness. Each surgery was painful, causing discomfort, and making me tired and weak. For more than two years, I was unable to fully use both my hands.

After every surgery, I would go into complete silence, feeling sad and disappointed. I cried seeking God and questioned Him, “Why?” But amidst all that was happening to me, I went into devotion, praying and seeking God’s answer.

I was in silence when the Lord Jesus showed me the parts of His two hands that were nailed to the cross. He revealed to me that His hands were nailed for me. He was crucified because He loves me. In that moment, God touched my heart deeply, and He opened my eyes and ears to see and hear Him. His love comforted me.

Throughout my recovery from the surgeries, God filled me with His joy and peace. He revived my faith in Him and I now pray for forgiveness, for my family and for the nations. I’m thankful to Him that as a trained nursery nurse, I was able to care for my hands and can now fully use them with strength, even typing out this testimony. Indeed the Lord is our healer and comforter. – Louise

Prayer gave me peace throughout dialysis
I have been undergoing dialysis and the cannulations have been stressing me out as they sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. The first two times, it went well. However, on the third time, there was no blood trace after poking in the needle. The machine sounded an alarm, followed by an awful pain resulting in my hand swelling and bruising.

Finally, I came to understand that I am God’s creation, and that includes my body and my blood vessels. I was assured that He knows my situation best and that He can give clear instruction to my organs. All I could do was to pray for His mercy relentlessly.

After prayer, I felt calm and was no longer anxious and nervous. Through the power of prayer, my faith is renewed as I place my trust fully in God. After that incident, I realised that by proclaiming God’s truth, my trust and faith in Him is strengthened and renewed. In this journey, I gain strength and grace from God Almighty one step at a time. – Deaconess Ngeo

God preserved my mum’s life despite a heart attack
Early in the year, God assured me that with Him, all things are possible. I wrote in my journal, ‘Pray, strengthen your heart, don’t be afraid’. Little did I know that God was preparing me for a storm.

A few days later, my mum complained of chest pain. She had a heart attack, and upon admission, we realised it was a major one that affected blood supply to other organs. There was water in her lung and her kidneys were affected too.

The news was very bad on top of her old age. There wasn’t much we could do but ‘wait and see’ – and pray. We sought prayers from others and they rallied behind us. We held onto Exodus 15:2, “The Lord is my strength and my defense, he has become my salvation.”

With medical care and through prayer, my mum had a successful angioplasty and was discharged in time for Chinese New Year. Looking back, I thank God that He preserved her life as I hear news of people dying of heart attacks with no warning.

There were other incidents where God was at work. For instance, she struggles to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings and is not fond of doctors. Yet, she told me that her heart is at peace when we told her of hospitalisation. She kept herself strong by praying and reminding us to keep praying for her. Indeed, with God, all things are possible. – Rudeen

Overcoming bone cancer through prayer and trust
Back in 2013, I was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer called Parosteal Osteosarcoma. I had to resign from my role as a pastor and get treatment. The outcome was I had to remove my left thigh bone immediately to prevent the cancer from spreading to the rest of my body.

The surgery was major; it took six hours and I lost three litres of blood. My prayer to God was to keep the pain away after surgery. Sure enough, He heard my prayer. I did not feel any pain even after the anaesthetic wore off, and despite the wound being 40cm long.

For three months, I rested and recuperated at home. During this time, I experienced spiritual and life struggles. At first, I was mad at why God gave me bone cancer and removed my thigh bone. I couldn't climb, run, or even walk like before. I even started to fear that I couldn’t walk normally again.

But with the help of a physical therapist, God gave me the strength to take each step forward. After three months, I could walk again. But I was still unable to perform simple tasks like going to the bathroom or taking a shower without help. I felt useless. However, I knew in my heart that God loves me, and through others’ encouragement, I was able to get out of the low point of my life.

I can’t imagine facing this without God, and though there are more challenges ahead, I know that He is with me through the ups and downs. I hold on to this verse: “Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.” (Isaiah 41:10, MSG) – Pastor Lydia

I prayed for everyone in the Covid ward, not just for myself
In February 2021, my four year-old daughter contracted Covid-19 from day care. The whole ordeal put my family into chaos as it was right before Chinese New Year and our elderly parents were visiting. Everyone tested negative but I had to accompany my daughter to the quarantine centre for nine days even though she had no symptoms.

We had a private room but shared toilets, and it was uncomfortable. The heat was causing her to have rashes and I was worried that I would catch Covid from the other patients. I could not sleep and wished time would pass quickly, and cried and prayed a lot. That was when God said, "Pray for the entire ward, not just for yourself to be Covid-free.”

Since then, I had a mindset shift. I prayed for all the patients in the ward, and was reminded that Jesus loves me and everyone else too. The days passed easier, with many opportunities to interact with other patients and cheer them up. On Day 8, I fasted and prayed again as my results were out the next day. If I was positive, I would have to stay another 10 days. The report came out that night and I was negative!

On the night before we were discharged, the rain fell and the cool was a breath of fresh air. God assured me of His love through the rain, and that He is in control. Even if I go through another storm, He will be there with me. God is a god of community and we are to pray for others too, not just ourselves. – Julia

Prayer resulted in a smooth surgery
In December 2020, I was diagnosed with congenital cysts in both ovaries after an MRI scan. I asked God to provide a good specialist for a second opinion, and He did. The prognosis was still the same: I had to remove the cysts immediately through surgery.

I was afraid as I never had surgery before in my 40+ years of life. I prayed and sought God’s will. My husband and family prayed too, along with my church family. The days leading up to surgery were filled with prayers, physical rest and also resting in God’s Word, the Bible.

The surgery went smoothly – praise God! Only one cyst was found and removed. The other one seen previously in the scan could not be found. Lab results showed the cyst was not congenital and non-cancerous. There was no need for a follow-up and 99% of the hospital bills were covered by insurance.

The subsequent weeks of recovery were full of God’s grace and mercy, as it was smooth and bearable. Praise God for His healing and His provision. His steadfast love never ceases and His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). – Phoebe

God healed my husband
from Covid-19
Recently, my husband contracted the Covid-19 virus even though our family had been careful to wear masks, sanitize our hands and follow SOPs. His symptoms were mild at first, with fever and slight cough. But he developed diarrhea, and we called for an ambulance to Sg Buloh Hospital. The hospital was full, and we were told to quarantine at home. As he worsened, we prayed and asked God to make a way. The next day we received a call to bring him to Hospital Putrajaya.

There, he was admitted to the normal ward, but then, his oxygen level dropped to below 50%. He was moved to ICU and the doctors wanted to intubate him as he may not survive. I was shocked and could not respond, then started crying and screaming for my son-in-law to speak to the doctor. My son called from Canada, and together with my daughter we were all in a video call with the doctors, pleading for them not to intubate him as it would be a 50-50 chance of survival.

Through the video call, my son-in-law shouted, “Daddy, you have to be strong!” Just then, my husband began to move. He waved his hand to show the doctor he did not want to be intubated. God began to move in the doctor’s hearts, and they increased his oxygen level to 80% using a high-flow nasal cannula. Just then, my husband began to breathe again.

At home, we called on a few intercessors to begin praying over Zoom. After 12 days of praying daily for one to two hours, my husband recovered and was moved to the normal ward. Finally, he was discharged after 24 days, in which 16 days were spent in the ICU. By the grace of God, he is recuperating well at home.

Through this experience, I am assured that prayer draws God’s attention, especially when we cry out to Him in desperation. He connects with our spirit and hears us, and in difficult times, He reassures us as we seek him through prayer. – Sherrine

I prayed and God saved me from drowning
When I was 24, I had a near-death experience that would change the course of my life forever. On a mission trip to Sarawak, our team were headed to Belaga village along the Rejang River in a small boat. I was a city girl from Kuala Lumpur and did not know how to swim. I was the first to get off the boat and stood on the landing, but in the pitch darkness, did not realise it was only a small strip and fell into the water!

I tried to break the surface, but got caught underneath the jetty and after some time, realised that I would drown if I did not get out of the water. I pleaded with God and asked Him to spare my life, and that if He did I would surrender my life to be used at His will. My team members quickly got off the boat to look for me, but couldn’t see me. They started praying out loud and pleading for God to save me.

Then, the Lord performed a miracle and I drifted out of the jetty heading downstream of the river. I was pushed out of the water and waved my hands frantically. At that precise moment, one native member of the team saw my hands, grabbed them, and pulled me out.  I was lifted onto the platform and my life was miraculously spared!

That was over 30 years ago, and since then I have returned to Sarawak to serve as a teacher and lecturer, and share the Gospel with my students. The truth is that just before my accident all those years ago, God had been speaking to me in His still small voice to serve as a teacher in Sarawak, but I had said, ‘No, thank you God. I am perfectly happy to continue my life in the city.’

Today, I’m also happily married to a native pastor and my life is a testimony of the power of prayer, and that when we surrender our life plan to God, He will fulfil only good plans which no eye has seen nor ear has heard for those who love Him. (1 Corinthians 2:9) – Yip Lan
