DAY 12 - THE RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION OF JESUS

READ: MARK 16:1-8 & MARK 16:19

Mark’s narrative of the resurrection has long puzzled many interpreters. After witnessing the most glorious and significant event in the course of human history, the women who came to anoint Jesus’ body “went out and fled from the tomb” because they were “trembling and bewildered” and they “said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid” (Mark 16:8). This was hardly a proper ending to the Gospel! Or, was it?

One of the interesting literary patterns employed by Mark is the “command to silence” motif. Throughout the Gospel, we read frequently that Jesus did not permit people to tell others about himself or the miracles He did (Mark 1:34, 44; 3:12; 5:43; 7:36; 8:26, 30; 9:9). Jesus knew that the crowd would make Him their political king (John 6:15). This was contrary to His mission on earth, which was to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Because of this, He commanded people not to tell others about Him, at least not until He had risen from the dead (9:9).

But after the resurrection, Jesus’ followers were commanded to spread the gospel (Matthew 28:18–20). Yet, Mark never tells us whether the women eventually overcame their fear and went to tell the others about Jesus’ resurrection. Many readers who have been following Mark’s narrative would be left wondering, “Did they go?”

This may well have been the point of Mark’s omission of the women’s response! As readers ask this question of the women, the gospel also invites us to ask this question of ourselves. Have we gone? Have we been faithfully proclaiming this glorious gospel of Jesus Christ who died, rose, and will come again? As the ascended Jesus is the same Jesus who will come again (Acts 1:10–11), may we have the courage to go and tell this good news to those who need to hear it.

REFLECTION

  1. Why do you think the women fled from the tomb after hearing about the resurrection of Christ and were afraid to tell this good news to others?
  2. Before His ascension, Jesus gave His followers the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20). How are you obeying Jesus’ commission to go and make disciples of all nations?

PRAYER

Everlasting Father, whose Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended to heaven and now sits at Your right side: grant us strength and boldness to go and make disciples of all nations. May we proclaim Him as the Saviour of the world so that people will come to know Him and worship at His feet. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

CONCLUSION

During the course of writing this devotional, I was by Mum’s bed as her breaths became shallower and less frequent over the days. On the morning she left me, she choked a couple of times, then slipped peacefully into the presence of God. Her departure left a void that only memories of her could fill. Yet, as a family, we have this hope that we will be reunited with her one day. This is because we believe in the most significant event in the course of human history—the glorious resurrection of Christ on Easter morning. The apostle Paul declares that if Christ has not risen from the dead, our faith is futile (1 Corinthians 15:12–19). Our hope and faith in God lie in the very fact of the resurrection of Christ.

As you journeyed through this devotional, my prayer is that it may draw you closer to God, deepen your understanding of the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ, and encourage you to live your life as a faithful follower of Jesus.

We have encountered many characters in this booklet: Peter and the other disciples; the religious leaders who rejected Jesus; Pontius Pilate, who caved in to pressure and did what was morally wrong; Simon of Cyrene, who carried the cross for Jesus and whose life was changed; Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, the secret disciples who later emerged as loyal disciples of Jesus; the women on Easter Sunday; and many unnamed followers. Perhaps you identify closely with one of these characters. Perhaps God is speaking to you through these characters. Wherever you are in your journey of faith at the moment, may you look to God for strength, guidance, and wisdom to help you navigate through life until we see God face to face one day.

Truly, Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again! May Christ grant you grace that is sufficient for you in times of weakness, and strengthen you in your faith as you take up your cross and follow Him daily.
